Reporting Day

This is the day all Red Sox players must report. They don’t actually have to be here at the park in person, they simply must check in and let the club know they are somewhere in Fort Myers. Spotted this morning was outfielder Jason Bay – his first spring in “The Fort.” Bay becomes a free agent at the end of this season. One scene that will play out is the battle for shortstop between Julio Lugo and Jed Lowrie. Lowrie told SportsCenter 5 , “I want the job and I think I’m the best candidate for the job.” Lugo has two years remaining at $18 million per year and will be difficult to deal.

It is breezy and a bit cooler this morning. The crowds are noticeably smaller this year, perhaps another residue of the economy. This is school vacation week and usually there are throngs of fans. The crowd probably can be measured in the hundreds.

Happy Presidents Day!
