Humiliating Defeats
July 20, 2008

I must have missed this bit from Jimmy Kimmel amidst the hoopla after the Celtics won the NBA Championship. Nothing says “funny” like Billy Dee Williams in a smoking jacket, making fun of Kobe Bryant.

Championship Parade was Great, but…
June 20, 2008

It’s time to bring back the Rally at City Hall Plaza. When celebrating championships, the Rally has given us the most memorable moments from Larry Bird telling Moses he can Eat ____ in 1981 to Bob Kraft ill advised (but hilarious) dance after the Pats 1st Super Bowl. Today’s parade was great, but cut it in half and let the players address the crowd and express their emotions. And Let them dance- now that’s entertainment.

Parades and rally’s aside- It’s take time to fully appreciate what the Celtics organization has accomplished because it is truly historic , having the biggest turnaround in NBA history end up with a championship. Danny Ainge pulled off 2 blockbuster deals. Ownership supported it paying a 7 Million dollar luxury tax after taking on the whopping salaries of Garnett’s 23M and Allen’s-16M, to go along with Pierce’s 17M.

Appreciate the effort of the teams supporting cast-22 year old Rajan Rondo and 23 year old Kendrick Perkins. Their improvement was remarkable. 2 of my favorites-James Posey, who added the critical toughness to this team, and 38 year old P-J Brown who came out of retirement to play a pivotal role in this championship run. Leon Powe and Eddie House, -Danny Ainge made all of the right moves, and Doc Rivers was the perfect coach to manage these personalities and egos.

Beating the Lakers was just the icing on the cake. Smug Phil Jackson humbled. MVP Kobe Bryant outplayed by Paul Pierce. It just doesn’t get any better.

Looking Good
June 18, 2008

The Celtics have come out on fire in the second half, behind a rejuvenated Ray Allen (11 points so far, on no sleep at all). The Celtics lead 63-38… and it’s going to take a miracle for the Lakers to come back the way this crowd is going. It’s downright deafening in here.

Barring an outrageous Lakers comeback, this is going to be the last post for awhile. Want to leave nothing to chance for what should be a long and wild postgame show!

Let’s go Celtics!

Championship Caliber
June 18, 2008

Bill Belichick and Bill Russell exchanged pleasantries at the three point line during the half. That’s a lot of title bling combined there.

Beat L.A.!
June 18, 2008

(5:20 left in the half) BEAT LA! The chant is thunderous… the Garden is literally shaking (making me a bit concerned that I’m up on the 9th floor). We’re in a timeout after James Posey made another big three to put the Celtics up 43-29.

(47 seconds left in the half) Your defining shot of the game may have just happened. Kevin Garnett one handed a shot off glass as he was getting shoved to the floor. He slid backwards in the paint pumping his fist as the crowd went insane. After sinking the free throw, it’s 56-35 Celtics. Too soon to cue up Championship Gino? Maybe not as Perkins just swatted Lamar Odom, followed by a layup for the ailing big man to make it 58-35, and now it is beyond loud.

What a first half for the Celtics. Get that trophy shined up!

Powe In The Paint
June 18, 2008

(8:37 to play in the half) Nothing gets this crowd going like Leon Powe getting some lunchpail points in the paint. He did just that, grabbing a pass, getting hit hard by Ronny Turiaf, and laying it in.

Doc Rivers snagged a technical a few minutes before this, probably arguing all of the touch fouls that have been called in this game. We’ll see if that comes into play later.

But all we want to know right now, is, whooooooooooooo wants a t-shirt! A little early for this. I don’t like taking popular in-game segments and moving them, such as Lucky’s Dunk Show and this. Keep this the way they are! No jinxes!

(6:50 to play in the half) Some hard work in the paint by Paul Pierce and Big Baby (seeing some time) lead to offensive rebounds which in turn lead to consecutive threes by Posey and House! 38-29 Celtics… timeout Lakers! It is thunderously loud in here right now… louder than I’ve heard at Fenway Park during the World Series… much louder than Gillette Stadium… oh wait, that’s because Bill Belichick just appeared on CelticVision.

Ray Allen update… he was poked in the eye, and just received a HUGE ovation as he walked back out on the court.

Ray In Trouble
June 18, 2008

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joey Kramer, along with NKOTB’s Donnie Wahlberg have been spotted in the crowd. Bill Belichick and Theo Epstein are here too.

(4:20 to play in the 1st) Ray Allen just made a layup, but appeared to take a shot to the head (or poke in the eye) that sent him back to the locker room. Didn’t appear to be serious. We’ll keep you updated. 14-14.

The quarter ends with a bang, literally, as KG stuffs home a PJ Brown pass. The crowd is on their feet as time expires… 24-20 Celtics.

Wha Huh?
June 18, 2008

We just tipped off and already Kendrick Perkins has his first foul, followed quickly by a Kobe Bryant jumper for 2. However, Perk did pull down an offensive rebound on the other end, so the shoulder looks OK so far.

(10:34 to play in the first) Kevin Garnett just passed up about three open looks that led to a Rajon Rondo 20-footer. That is NOT going to win this game. KG also got called for a rather tacky foul on the other end, the third questionable call on the Celtics so far by the crew of Joey Crawford, Bennett Salvatore, and Eddie Rush (all no strangers to controversy). Will they play a role in the outcome? 4-3 Lakers.

(5:25 to play in the first) A raucous crowd and a back and forth sloppy game so far, but one thing is for certain, Kobe Bryant came to play. He’s already drained 3 3-pointers and nearly made a fourth on a desperation heave as the shot clock wound down. 13-12 Lakers as we take a TV timeout.

June 18, 2008

Welcome to the Garden for Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics. The arena is not even half full and already it is thunderously loud.

Want to say thank you to Jo Jo White, M.L. Carr (my personal favorite guest of alllll time), and the legendary Bill Russell for joining us on tonight’s (hopefully final) pregame show.

Beat LA chants are breaking out left and right as the traditional “open” video plays on CelticVision. I’ve said it throughout this series. Aside from Detroit, NO team comes close to the level of in-game excitement you get from the Garden and CelticVision. No oldies hits and Laker Girls here!

Time for the starting lineups!
